Frequently Asked Questions
If you have a question, we have the answer! We’ve put together the answers to a few of your most common questions to help you out. Of course, if we haven’t addressed your question here, please feel free to give us a call.
How do I register my child for school?
Welcome to Port Allegany; we’re glad to have you! To register a child entering kindergarten or to transfer a new student to our district, please visit our Registration and Immunizations page.
Back to TopMy child missed school due to illness or another reason. What do I need to do?
Regular attendance is paramount for student success; however, we understand that illness or other unforeseen factors may require your child to miss a school day from time to time. We require that all students bring a note from their parent or guardian stating the specific reason for absence in order to excuse the absence.
Please be aware that students absent during either the morning or afternoon session of school cannot participate in public performances or practices in the evening. We do not permit students who are absent from the Friday afternoon session to participate in practice on Saturday.
Back to TopOur family will be traveling during regular school days. How can we excuse our children from school on those days?
While we strongly discourage absences on school days, we understand that in certain cases it may be necessary for students to miss school for family events. We encourage families to build in activities with educational value if the situation permits. We will provide your child with homework assignments and the opportunity to make up schoolwork without penalty. Please complete the Request for Excused Absence for Family Vacation/Travel form, and return it to your child’s school for approval prior to your travel dates.
Back to TopDoes the district provide transportation to and from school?
Yes, we do! Our transportation service is provided by Muccio Transportation. Riding the bus is a privilege, and we expect students to adhere to the basic rules of good conduct and courtesy. Please visit our Transportation page for more info about bus passes and expectations.

Back to TopHow can I find out about school cancellations or delays in the event of inclement weather?
In the event that we must cancel or delay school, we will provide notification by Facebook, Twitter, and to the local radio and television stations. Please tune in to any of the following stations: WHKS - 94.9, WPIG - 95.7, WBRR - 100.1, WQRM - 106.3, WPSU - 90.1, WFRM - 600 AM, WKBW - Channel 7, WVIB - Channel 4, WGRZTV - Channel 2, and WTAJ - Channel 10. We kindly ask for your cooperation by not calling the schools directly; our staff will be very busy with other responsibilities related to the delay or closing.
Back to TopDo you enforce a dress code for the schools?
We have designed our dress code guidelines to be as flexible as possible. However, we believe that language, dress, and the general behavior of people are social things that change according to the situation. What is proper and in good taste in one social situation may be improper and in poor taste in another.
We require that outfits worn to school be conducive to learning and appropriate for the situation to create a coeducational community of young people who value not only the knowledge of the subject matter but also the importance of decency, good taste, modesty, and regard for others. We will not permit any form of dress that is detrimental to the health, safety, or welfare of other students, or disruptive to the educational process.
Generally, we do not permit fishnet tops, tank tops, spaghetti-strap blouses or shirts, muscle shirts, bare back or bare midriff styles, T-shirts with offensive advertising or implied or suggestive vulgarity, or extremely short shorts or skirts.
